A crawler excavator is a fully hydraulic rotary construction machinery equipped with steel track chains as traveling gear. Its core advantages include low ground pressure, excellent off-road capability and high working stability, widely applied in earthmoving, mining and construction on complex terrain.

Core Definition & Structure

Definition: A professional term included in Terms of Civil Engineering. It consists of three assemblies: working device, upper revolving platform and crawler traveling device. It performs 360° full rotation driven by hydraulic system.

Structure Composition:

Working Device: Consists of boom, stick and bucket (mostly backhoe configuration). Digging movements are controlled by hydraulic cylinders.

Upper Revolving Platform: Integrates diesel engine, operator cabin, hydraulic pumps and slewing bearing to realize power output and body rotation.

Traveling Gear (Four Wheels & One Track): Drive wheel (power supply at rear), idler wheel (tension guidance at front), track roller (support machine weight), carrier roller (support upper track) and closed track shoe chain assembly.

Key Technical Features

Performance Advantages: Low ground pressure (special pontoon-type models can reach below 15kPa), preventing sinking on muddy land, swamps and gravel ground. Stable chassis absorbs digging reaction force well, suitable for heavy-duty operation with strong climbing capacity.

Main Limitations: Low travel speed (normally 2.3–3.3 km/h); flatbed trucks are required for long-distance relocation. Steel tracks may damage paved roads (some models can be fitted with rubber pads to mitigate this issue); relatively high energy consumption.

Power & Transmission: Mostly driven by diesel internal combustion engines with closed hydraulic circuits. Travel systems are generally equipped with two-speed hydraulic motors: low speed for high torque and high speed for relocation.
